This could be very involved on a 2015. Does your buddy have the sd card slot in the area above the radio. Cubby hole on top of the dash? That's the nav software slot to begin with.
Best guess is you'll still need a new radio, but not sure on that. Some other cars it's just disabled. Haven't looked at a 2015 without nav and with the touchscreen radio on it yet.
Sounds like the radio is the same but inside programming of the radio is different... I also wonder if the GPS is hooked up to the radio or even there as well... For 911 assist I would think it *might* be there, but not sure on that either.
Re: 911 assist - That actually stinks as my phone sucks up here for GPS location. Until the phone gets a fix I always on top of a mountain or wherever the tower "is". I rarely ever where the phone thinks I am, unless I am running an app that is constantly using the GPS. BUT the NAV in the truck is almost always spot on.
Not even close to worth the cost or effort for the end result I would get a good large screen aftermarket - much more frequent and less expensive map updates. Also, posted speed limits versus your speed. And if you tow, get an rv model. Proclipusa.Com has great dash and coffee cup based mounts for phones, tablets, and gps.

My 2015 Factory Nav does speed limits... Now, the iPhone Navigon one will actually sound an alert if you break the "posted" speed... I like that one and it works on iPads/iPhones.
I agree and like aftermarket GPSs better than the factory ones because of the update issue and usually better functionality. As not even the passenger can enter an address while driving with the factory one without a "lockpick" or other aftermarket bypass installed.
The one thing I do really, really life about the one built in to the truck is that it is always there, always on, always knows where you are. It doesn't block anything either. And leaving a different device suction cupped or otherwise in the vehicle is an extra invitation to someone breaking into your vehicle. So, you get to remove and reinstall it all the time. At least I would have to.
The OEM are getting better with the in vehicle stuff, but they still have a ways to go.
My 2011 nav system does display speed limits IF you are navigating to a destination. If you have not entered a destination, no speed limits. My Garmins display the speed limits all of the time.
Yes, mine too if on a route but not if just map, forgot the "if" clarification - thanks.
AND, aftermarket warns me verbally that "reduced speed limit ahead," "speed camera ahead," and "red light cameras ahead." when on a route or not.
Heads up option on Garmin is very very good, but I went the Rand/GoodSam gps route.
Yes I get the pain of incremental theft potential. I don't use it unless traveling -same with Torque Pro.

I just take my Garmin off of the dash and set it in the floor when I am stopped and away from the truck. When riding my motorcycles, I take the Garmin out of its mountain and stick it in my jacket pocket when I stop.
