Shift Collar replacement

I need to replace the shift collar on the sterring column of my 4X4 78 F150, 351M, Auto trans. Looks like a straight forward job, any hidden problems? Just pull the wheel and then remove the collar right? Do I need more than the collar and the shifter pin?

Beware of the 2 keyed bolts (threads facing you) that they don't fall into the shift tube.
No biggie, just a surprise when your not lookin for it...

On those two bolts, you don't need to remove the nuts completely to get the collar off - just loosen them but leave the nuts started until it's out of the truck so you can't drop them.

I replaced the collar and put everything back together and now the truck wont start in any gear. I can put in the gears and all the lights work fine. Any thought on what could be the problem?

What year? and automatic?
If its 73-77, check the neutral start switch. It's mounted on the steering column, under the dash, on top near the firewall. To check, hold the key in the "start" position and slowly move the gearshift from "park" position towards drive. If it tries to start, the switch is out of adjustment.

What year is the truck you're working on? Your "About Me" profile says 1980 F100.

You are asking this question in the 1973/79 F100 and larger truck forum.

They hold the steering column flange to the steering column. There are a couple of slots the square heads engage.
This is probably the "trickiest" part of reassembling a steering column.
Here is a youtube video on the reassembly. It's part three and is for an early Bronco but the process is the same.

I am back on the road. I had to tweak the bead on top a little, but after some struggle getting things together I am driving again. Thank you so very much for your insight and sharing your knowledge.

I think you grabbed the wrong thread but it's good to know you're back on the road.
