After doing the oil cooler twice (in four years) I smartened up and installed a coolant filter. It would have been cheaper and faster to have bought a kit but I like how this looks. Almost factory...
It's a hybrid. In the summer when the valve to the heater core is closed it goes to the filter only. In the winter it's a bypass unless I close the manual valve, in which case it is isolated from the system completely. If it warms up too slowly in the winter that is what I will most likely do. I was gonna go full flow but there isn't a lot of room for the size of filter that would be required.
Where do you get the base for that? eBay? I think something like that might be a good investment on my truck...
WIX BASE 24763
WIX FILTER 24069
Gates 28492 3/4 Inch Hose
all from Amazon.com
2- Mini Ball Valve 1/2" MALE X FEMALE NPT Chrome Plated Brass Body 450 psi M X F and 3- Dorman HVAC Heater Hose Connector - 3/4" Hose x 1/2" Npt x 1-3/4" Long Nipple were from ebay.com.
The rest of the steel pipes and fittings were made from an old 1/2" pipe thread Tee and some wrecking yard 3/4" coolant pipe and hose clamps.

I did the first time. This time I just swapped the cooler.
While you can find them on e-bay every filter manufactuer also sells the base and filter.
They are useually in a seperate section of their catalog.
Most engines do not come from the factory with a coolant filter not even for the big dogs. It is considered a add-on which most people do add on. Even on the big rigs.
I have the E350 van. Any recommendation for the best kit for a van? Dieselite sells a kit but does not come with mounting bracket. I want a complete kit.
