Coolant Flushes are important!

So a new purchase by one of my fleet customers. '07 with 57k on the clock.

Flushed the coolant system and you can see what came out. This is why the coolant you use is irrelevant. What matters is a filter, and consistent 50k flushes!

That's just plain nasty and with "only" 57K on the clock they wonder why cooling systems and oil coolers fail......

When I did my investigation into the clogging coolers a few years back (on TDS and OS.org; now also in my facebook page) I believed that it's not just an issue of miles but and issue of aging as well. Heat aging is always a factor with both liquids and hard parts, but you still see issues such as with this vehicle where the time is long while mileage is short. I'm really not a fan of the G-05 coolant in a diesel motor for very long.

For me three years is too long for any coolant in these motors, even ELC.

I have a filter, but in reality the volume of flow to the oil cooler vs a bypass filter is too great to think that a filter will relieve you of your woes. The oil cooler is just too damn good as a filter by itself.

No doubt about the filter. But, it does help.

There isn't a coolant in the world I would run for more the 50k or 3 years. Coolant breaks down just like oil. Time or use.

Flushing sooner doesn't hurt either depending on conditions and use, but generally 50k or 3 years is a good rule.

Wow! I just did mine, with 86,000 on the clock, and got nothing. I don't run a filter either. That is crazy!
I didn't flush though. Just a thorough drain and refill.

Same. I did mine a month or so ago with 88k on the clock and nothing nearly that nasty came out.

Mine looked like this. Maybe a couple of tablespoons worth. Drug a magnet through it and it didn't stick.

One issue is the results are all over the map. There are some who have gone a long time and distance without an issue, while others have issue in short durations. Owners, mechanics and engineers have not made a conclusive logical determination on the critical factors. Changing out a cooler is an expensive bet against cheaper and more frequent coolant changes.
