99 250 SD Tranny problems!!!

Hi everyone, I was originally a member years ago but have not been on and could not figure out any of my log in info so have had to start a new account. I am having some tranny troubles and was hoping to get a little insight or direction. I have a 99 F 250 with the V10 and 140,000 mi. The truck has been pretty good until this weekend. I was towing a 7,000 pound trailer and everything was going fine until I had to slow for a sharp turn then immediately ascend a fairly steep hill. About half way up the hill there was a pretty bad shuttering and a sort of grinding/popping sound. I stopped a to make sure the transfer case didn't pop out of gear and it had not. I got back on the gas and the truck moved up the hill but was revving high (4K) and only moving a couple mph as if the tranny was slipping bad. Once on flat ground i noticed that the revs did ot matter. 2k or 5k we still only went a couple mph with tranny slip and it would not attempt to shift. After putting it into park it would no longer move in any gear, forward or reverse or in any mode (4H, 4L, 2H). There is no unusual noise coming from the tranny. I am thinking pressure/shift solenoid since I lost all gears at once... Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like a torque converter failure to me but I'm not too familiar with the V10, hopefully someone else can chime in

It even sounds somewhat like when my u-joints were popping, only more severe.

Something mechanical broke inside the trans. We could guess all day as to exactly what broke. The only way to know is to pull it out and tear it down.

Revving the engine when it didn't want to go just made sure that the transmission is fully cooked and will need to be replaced. There may not be enough left to rebuild this one.

i am ruling out mechanical failures since there is no noise coming from the trans other than the original popping (to me felt/sounded like TC failed or clutches were repeatedly engaging/disengaging). I would assume a mechanical failure would not have pulled up the hill with a slip after the original failure. It made no noise while pulling up the hill either. I can tell the internals of the trans are spinning when taken out of park (again, with no noise). What has me wondering is that I lost all gears, forward and reverse once I took it out of gear for the first time, leading me to believe it is a pressure issue (hopefully).

Why would you ask for help then "rule out" the advice?

Mark Kovalsky helped design the 4R100 transmission. If he tells you it's a mechanical failure it's in your best interest to listen to him. Otherwise you will just be wasting your money.

I apologize if I stepped on any toes. I wasn't shooting down any advice, just giving more detail. I did say I assumed a mech failure would make noise and there is no noise to be heard. I am open to potentially any possibility.

OK, let's assume it is something electronic. That will set a code. Get the codes read. The cheap readers that auto parts stores use WILL NOT read these codes.

Could be. I include pressure issues in mechanical failures. If the pump broke you're going to have pressure problems. If a seal failed you have a mechanical problem.

If you want to see if it is pressure, put a 0-350 PSI gauge in the test port on the side of the trans. That will tell you right away.
