So I have a bench seat from a 77 in mine and I can't get in to drive it. I'm 6' 230lbs.... Before I go hunting, will an original seat allow more clearance?
Hard to tell. My '61 has the original seat, I'm 6'2", around 290, and I ended up putting a Mustang wood rimmed wheel on mine. That helped in the gut area, but it's kinda hard on my old man shoulders, so I'm adding power steering to go with the smaller wheel.
Original bench seat won't be any better than the seat you have now.
The leg room in these cabs is wanting and the older you get, the worse the situation becomes...due to 'Arthur' and other ailments.
Bucket seats that came with 1965/66 F100/250 2WD Rangers will help some.
These seats are the same as 1965/66 Mustang, but you'll also need the 4 special Ranger brackets that bolt to the floor pan, then to the seat tracks to raise and level the seats.

btw: If you want more legroom, buy a 1974 or later Super Cab. Remove the seat, drill new holes in the floor pan so it can be moved back further. Been there, done that.
EDIT: Tilt wheel optional: 1978/79 F100/350, available with 4 speed (rare) and A/T (somewhat easier to find). Not available with 3 M/T.
1961/77: NSS located on the steering column / 1978/79: NSS located on the transmission.
Not a big person so belly room was not an issue; swapped original seats for what I would describe as later model low profile seat from 87 Lariat and found the seat set some what lower, not certain if enough to offer the necessary room??
Perhaps swapping for a tilt steering wheel would be a viable option, not an authority but what I can gather from similar threads swapping later model, 70's Ford tilt column can get tricky particularly with regards to adapting the wiring; however, may be worth the research to determine if cost effective and a viable alternative. Another option; and what I would assume to be a direct swap, is perhaps going with a pricey aftermarket 65-66 tilt steering column?? Anyhow, food for thought??
The 65 with the 302 had the original bench seat and in comparing them to the my 65 CC seat I do not see that much of a significant difference.
Posting pic's of the 87 Lariat seat, what I would describe as 'low profile contoured seat', but based on pic's not clear whether there's much additional space. Beforehand I was given a 68-72 bench seat but found they set higher, and too firm for my backside, perhaps member can post cab pic's with the original 65/66 bench seat and get some indication??
I used the original 65 tracks and installed them on the 87 seats; which I believe can go up to the later 90 seats; however, over past few months there has been an influx of new Micro Breweries I have been checking out so I may need to change my moniker to 'big belly dave, and come up with another seating option?
Interesting! Thanks for that. I guess us Fat guys didn't buy the custom cab trucks back then....
I think the fat guys back then weren't as big as us fat guys today.
I own a restoration shop and I'm around the same cars all day that I remember from being a kid. Every one of those cars has shrunk from what it used to be. Even the big ones like Road Runners, or even the '55 Lincoln we're working on.
Me too! Now for some vinyl paint to cover the pea green. Or maybe just a western blanket cover.
Honestly recovering a seat yourself isn't to difficult if you think you might end up wanting to.. Can't remember the exact cost of my seat cover but I got it from LMC and it wasn't horrendous. I didn't myself and lined lined up pretty well, especially on the drivers side.
