Could there be hope in an Excursion return?

Chevy just announced a new Suburban HD 3500 to its lineup. Chevy confirms 2016 Suburban HD with new engine for fleets - The Newsroom - GM-Trucks.com
Ford needs to match this.

There may be hope after all.

Still no mention of a diesel for the new Suburban, without one I'm fairly certain Ford will stick with the Expy EL.

Working in Ford sales, I can say that at this point there is no talk of the return of the Ex.

Fleet Vehicle Sales only.

Matt is correct about the Expy EL and the Expy is soon to be a CUV, so...

Park your truck next to the expedition El and you will understand why they won't make another excursion. The excursion is bigger but you'll need to squint to see it. Add in the fact that with the ecoboost the expedition can tow 9200 lbs when properly equipped, then consider that many of our trucks would be a stretch to tow much more than that once you subtract curb weight from gcwr.

Expy is a real JUNK, SUV with full independent suspension, thing is three inches off the ground and can't be used for more than bringing kids to sports events. Put five full grown two hundred pound men, five auto loader guns, two 70 pound dogs, plus all teir hunting gear in the expy PLUS a 18ft enclosed trailer with two 4x4 atvs and about two hundred geese decoys etc and that expy will be literally dragging the hitch in the ground. Then try driving that street princess into a snow covered field with all that gear and trailer and watch it drag it's undercarriage into the dirt! GM is still offering a "real" SUV with a solid rear axle and one that actually sits up off the ground. I don't know ANY hunter or guide service that uses a ford SUV unless it's a ex...

New Excursions and 6 door Super Dutys

Ford needs to take the Expedition and give it the F150 Raptor treatment...

Ford is kind of turning their backs on the whole "real" SUV market altogether.

The closest thing they have left to a "real" SUV is the Expedition and it's IRS really hampers it.

FWIW, the Fast Lane Truck guys put the Exp EB through the Ike Gauntlet and weren't impressed at all towing with it.

It's like the Excursion was Ford's last hurrah against Chevy in the truck-based SUV game and when it died, they slowly started closing up shop.

Honestly, I feel the same way about the Exp as I do about the old Ranger. Ford said, "Well, they don't sell, so we're gonna have to stop making them."

Well, if you'd ever updated them with a new bodystyle and powertrain, you might have sold more of them.

"Well, the Exp isn't selling well so we need to do a major overhaul and make it a crossover a la the Explorer."

Well, base a new Expy off the new F150 for a change and you might move more of them. The new ones look like 1997 models with updated front fascias!!

Youre a little off the mark. The real problem with the Ranger is that the profit margin and sales volume didn't warrant redesigning and retooling them. In both the Ranger and the excursion (to a lesser extent the expedition,) the economy, fuel prices, the downturn and the timing of these things with their particular design cycles certainly had an effect on those decisions.

Ford never sold a ton of excursions compared to how many suburban Chevy was selling. Even the new suburbans are more carlike than ever. My opinion is that trucks got so nice that many families who used to tow with a loaded suburban or expedition are now towing with king ranch or platinum crew cab f350's. People are using expeditions like a more comfortable and more capable minivan and for that they are perfect. Ground clearance and 4wd, yet a comfortable ride and will still tow a decent load.

During 4 July a local Chev dealer had a Suburban on display in the town square as we walked up to it DW says, "It's bigger than Rudolph."

The 'burb sits lower, and due to the long rear window it is deceptive. Inside much more narrow and the ceiling is lower.

Actual Specs:

I might consider a 3500 burb with a diesel even if it is government motors... 😁
