Transmission woes

My C4 transmission in my 1985 F150 is in need of a rebuild. I am starting to collect parts for it and I want to install a shift kit while I am in there along with a B&M 2,000 stall. I am looking at Transgo reprograming kits and the one they have for a C4 says from 1970-1983. The part number for Summit racing is TRG-40-20. Would this one work I do I need to look for a different one? Also what rebuild kit brand would ya'll suggest?

Are you sure you have a C4 and not a C6? I thought that the C4 was discontinued with the F100.

3 auto trannies listed for 1985 are a AOD, C6, and a C5 for a 2wd.

By the looks of it then, it must be a c5. I have heard that the c4 and c5 are very similar. Could I just put a c4 valve body and tourqe convertor in it and call it a c4?

If nothing is available for a c5, and you have your heart set on spiffing up a c4, why don't you find a c4 from a earlier car or truck and rebuild it and put it in place? I don't know the ends and outs of c4's, cars versus trucks, lengths, etc, but little online research may help. I believe when the 5.0 mustangs came out and people started hopping them up, the AOD started having problems and they started swapping in the c4 tranny and making it hold up to the power they were putting to the ground.
