Dynomax Y-Pipe
Dynomax Y-Pipe
I have an 89 F250 extended cab long bed with the 7.3 no turbo. I am looking at upgrading the exhaust to help it breathe a little better. From what I understand the factory y-pipe is the biggest restriction point on these trucks. I found a dynomax y-pipe was wondering if this adds much improvement because it looks to be the same configuration as the stock pipe. Maybe a bigger pipe size I'm not sure. I have two complete stock systems that came off of 2002 crew cab powerstrokes. My hope is to adapt this onto the truck after the y-pipe. I believe they are 3.5" but not sure. Anyway is it worth my time and money to purchase the dynomax y-pipe or would i be about the same staying with the stock one.
nope.you need to make one.when i had chip n/a i had it done.yes.it was very much worth it.
yes.that alone will help greatly.
tho,it's said anything over 3"-3.5" is not needed for the IDI even w/turbo.
so you could save some $ on pipe size and muffler if your adding/keeping one.
however the larger the pipe, the deeper the tone will be generally, and if you prefer the looks of 4" is also reason enough.
the stock pipe is small and it's not designed all that well.it's built so that one side "pulls" the exhaust out the other side.
its not the best of ideas lol.
here's what you want to start with:

notice how much free flowing the custom built Y is over stock.having them free flow into a collector is best like that.
if you can't build it yourself, take your truck and that pic to a exhaust shop and have them build/install it for you.
if your N/A, you could bypass the Y pipe altogether and run true duals.an advantage over the turboed guys.
if you prefer duals that is.imho the free flow Y and large single is best anyway.
if your N/A (and imho, even if your turboed even) she's going to be too loud when hauling/coming onto her for a good grade, for a straight pipe.you'll soon realize a muffler is in order.
dont skimp on the muffler.a good free flow, that won't rob your power, yet tone her down, will set ya back about $100.

I put the complete Dynomax system in my 90', primarily because it was actually cheaper than piecing together my own setup even for a turn down in front of the axle.
The Y-pipe fits pretty well, it is certainly much easier than building one from scratch, but it is almost a dead copy of the factory set up. The rest of the Dynomax kit works, but it's nothing exceptional. It is notably louder than stock, but I personally like the sound way better.
It's worth noting that the setup has been on the truck for about a year and half and most of the piping has light rust on it, including the "stainless steel" muffler. I don't drive the truck a ton, so for me this is a bit of a disappointment.
