hye guys i have a 360 with a 184 tooth ring gear on the fly wheel... i kept going through starters...nd noticed the ring gear is all tore up and shot...now what would be the correct ring gear tooth number for a 76 f250 with a 4 speed np435 and a 360 fe? ford told me a 164 with a 9 tooth starter gear.....
one more thing....i have a powermaster tourque starter...and it has an 11 tooth instead of the stock 9....what should i do here?
I was having the same problem with my 1976 F250 3 speed auto, went through 4 or 5 starters and a flywheel trying to use a stock starter. I'm not sure on the teeth count but I used the Powermaster 9606 and have had zero issues since.
Also, I do have headers which seemed to be cooking the starer as well.
184 is the correct ring gear tooth count for a 360 or 390 in a truck. The stock starter drive would have had 9 teeth. With the correct original starter and all components in good condition, you should have no issues with only normal wear and tear after several years. I suspect your 11 tooth starter may not be the right application.
