Starter issues....

.... or so I thought. I have a 76 F150 4x4 with a rebuilt 360 in it, and I'm having trouble getting it started every other time I try to start it. It's hard to describe what happens, but it seems like the starter doesn't catch a gear on the flywheel and just spins on one of the teeth of the flywheel. I know it's not the starter cause I already replaced that . In order to start it I have to put it in gear, rock the truck a little bit to move the flywheel a bit, then hop in the truck and most times it catches then. I didn't put any shims on the starter because the old one didn't have any (then again the old starter I think had the same problem).

Anyways, can you guys help me? I'm getting tired of looking like an idiot in the parking lot at school hopping out of my truck, rocking my truck, and and getting back in.

You may have a bad flywheel, broken tooth or teeth. That could be the reason it did it with the other one. Remove the starter and have somebody crank the engine by hand using a socket wrench on the front of the crank. Mark the flywheel and as they crank it ,check for broken teeth though the starter opening. If you see even just one ,then you need to replace the flywheel,or at least the ring gear. JIM

If an A/T, you have to replace the flexplate as the ring gear is made as part of it.

The same flexplate (C5AZ-6375-D) fits: 1965/67 F100/350 352 MX C-O-M / 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 C6 / 1965/71 352/390 FX/MX/C6 Passenger Cars.

If a M/T, the flywheel's edit: 184 tooth (not 176 tooth) ring gear is replacable, has to be sweated off/on. Any autoparts machine shop can do this.

The M/T ring gear (C5AZ-6384-A) has the same applications as the A/T flexplate. And, this same ring gear was also used w/the 240 & 300 I-6's.

Looks like I have something to do this weekend now...

Numberdummy- Stupid question, but what do you mean by sweating on/off? It's a manual tranny by the way.

The old ring gear has to be heated up to remove it, the new ring gear has to be heated up to install it.

Known as sweating in the biz. Sweating also used for installing gunsights on barrels, the front sight on Colt SAA's for example.

You can do it yourself. If you have a torch you can heat the old ring gear on the flywheel. You dont have to get it cherry red, just warm it up good all the way around. Then knock it off with a punch and hammer. To install the new one, put the ring gear in the oven at 350 degrees for about an hour. Throw the flywheel in the freezer the night before. When your ring gear is hot youll have to work quickly and have the flywheel ready along with a hammer and brass drift just in case. just drop the ring gear in place on the flywheel and it should slide right in place. If not, use the drift and hammer to gently tap it down. There should be a lip on the flywheel that the ring gear seats against. Also, when you remove the old one, note that one side of the teeth are tapered, the side that the starter engages from. MAKE SURE you install the new one the same way. Once everything comes back to room temperature, it should be good to go.....Good luck!!!!!!!!

Update: Well I finally put my truck up on the lift and checked my flywheel. And wouldn't ya know it, there's ONE tooth missing out of the whole flywheel . This is not looking fun, I'm getting sick of pulling motors in these trucks. I already pulled this motor once, then I have a 78 with a 300 getting ready to go in

Anyways, I just wanted to say thanks guys , I probably wouldn't have checked the flywheel cause it was fine 6 months ago when I put the motor in.

Parts catalog error. 1964/72 truck shows 176T. 1965/72 car, 1973/79 truck show the same part number, but says 184T which is correct.

I corrected post #4 (you one you quoted), now sez 184T.
