starters and ring gears

My F250/ 300cid has been thru 13 starters and three ring gear replacements. (since about 1991) What could be wrong?

There seems to be inadequate tooth to tooth contact and the teeth on both pieces are eaten. This starter (almost shot) is only two weeks old.

I have changed the ring gear (on the fly wheel)- this is number three.

Can I somehow shim the ring gear back toward the starter so as to engage more teeth?

Or is the flywheel warped? Gotta do a rear seal anyway so what do I look for while the trannies out?

Thanks to all you knowledgeble folks who help the poor man get along.

It sounds like you have mismatched components to be having this much trouble. What year truck do you have and is the engine original. A little more info is needed.

I do know there is a difference between a starter for a manual or automatic which is hard to see with just a quick glance. There is also a difference for the plate that goes between the motor and trans I think? Also, if the plate is bent it will **** the starter away from yhe ring gear. The infamous Ford starter problem lives on!
