My new truck finally arrived last week, and in checking things out, I made an interesting discovery.
The truck came with Hankook 275/55R20 tires, however, the spare is a Goodyear Wrangler 275/65R18. I expected it to be on a steel wheel, which it is, but I did not expect a different size and brand tire. My dealer claims that all the trucks come that way from the factory. Supposedly as a small money saving idea from Ford.
My question is... What about your trucks? You don't need to drop the spare, just slide underneath with a flashlight.
Related question: is there room to swap out the small spare for a standard full size tire?
The smaller tire is standard equipment. This silly policy goes back a long way. I had a 82 Taurus with such a doughnut. To make the sale I required the dealer provide a std tire which fit in the well in the trunk.
Mine is the same. I actually had a tire blow a couple of days ago and realized the smaller spare. I asked the dealer and he said they were like that because there isnt enough room under the bed for a full size spare.
The diameter of the 275/55/20 is 31.91" and the diameter of the 275/65/18 is 32.07".
So little difference it doesn't matter. The fact that the spare is on a steel wheel is going to make any one want to replace or repair the damaged tire ASAP.
Yeah, I wasn't thrilled about the Hankooks, but no choice on that. I know the steel wheel costs less that the alloy/aluminum, but here's the funny part. Tire Rack lists the Hankook for 201.68 and the Goodyear for 224.62, an increase of 22.94. So why not supply a 20" steel wheel with the cheaper Korean tire?
