Undersize spare tire

Although I've been under my truck quite a few times I never paid much attention to the spare tire. While I was under today I noticed that the spare tire is an 18", while my tires on the ground are 20". The spare although a Continental brand as opposed to the other 4 Michelins appears to be a regular duty tire, not marked for tempory use only. Is it normal for Ford to supply an 18" spare with 20" tires on the truck?

I asked my dealer the same question. Apparently the spare should be considered temporary even though it's on a full 18" wheel. He mentioned that the reason is likely that the 20" is just too big to fit under there. If you need it the 18" will get you to a tire shop safely.

Yep Nipper. The spares on 18 and 20's are all the 18" conti's

Kinda really messes up rotating the spare thru the rotation.

OK so I guess everyone with 20 inch wheels has a 18" spare. I was wondering if it was just me. I will have to do some measuring to see if a mounted 20" will fit below the bed. It probably won't caus if it did Ford would have given us the same size tire. My truck is now wearing a cap,so I may buy a full size tire and matching wheel on ebay, and keep it in the bed. That way I can run around as long as I want before hitting the repair shop.

Is the outside diameter including the tire itself still the same though?

No it's not. The Conti is 33.2" in diameter the Michelins are 34.4" Thats almost 1.25" difference in size.

So I guess the question is will a 1" bigger tire fit?
The second question is. Will it matter? I'm on my 4th Superduty and I never have actually rotated my spare into my tire rotation in 12 years. And to be honest, never even used my spare.
