E4OD T/C Seated Depth

Meant to measure torque converter depth from face of bellhousing while I had it out & forgot. Is there a standard depth from either the face of the T/C stud or their ends? I've jiggled, twisted & spun. Not sure if it's fully seated.

The ends of the stud tips are about 2-3 mm below the face currently.

Wellll....

Looks like I'll be rigging something up with my engine hoist in order to stand this thing on its tail, so I can spin/seat the TC. I REALLY don't want to do that.

The ends of the studs are near as I can tell, somewhere in the neighborhood of 2, 1 or .5mm proud (above) the face of the trans bell. When I checked before, I didn't know that there was a small bit of tilt/lean of the TC on the shaft.

I can get the studs all the way through the flex plate & the trans centering pins are still quarter inch or less from making contact with the engine block. Maybe an inch total separation between block & trans bell face.

I've spun that thing till my arms about to fall off, and I just can't get what must be that third drop.

At the transmission plant the converter is spun while the trans is bellhousing up. Sometimes you can get lucky spinning it horizontal, but not often.

Is that what those huge ears on the side of the bellhousing are for? Only one has a hole. I've barked my calves on those %@*# things & have considered whacking them off if they serve no other purpose.

No, they are locators for machining the case when the trans was built. Once the trans has left the factory they have no further use.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've always installed torque converters horizontally with no issues.

i always have horizontally as well.you really can't mess it up.if it's seated you'll know it.if it's not,you'll be unsure.don't be unsure.
when it's seated,it's a very deep thud sound and you can't reach around the back with your fingers.it will be seated too deeply.push inwards as you turn.when bolting up the trans,if it doesn't look or act right.it's not.don't force it or you'll hurt the pump.pull it back, and take the converter right out if you want and start again.push and turn for a full minute, and you'll know that's it.

Yeah I can get a good portion of my hand behind the TC, so that's pretty much a give away that its not all the way there. I've done all manner of combinations of push/pull just a tad while rotating a degree or two as well as full removal & reinstall at different clock positions.

This weekend belongs to the wife's chores & gardening, but Monday it goes up on its tail cause I'm not risking any damage to this rebuild .

UPS dropped off overnight shipment late this afternoon.

Sucker spun all the way down horizontally in about 3 rotations.

Bell face to stud tip, about 7mm:

Bell face to torque converter stud face, about 20mm.

An update.

After experiencing a "rattle" in the flex-plate/TC area I removed trans to find some damage followed by dropping oil pan & discovering part of my thrust bearing. Documented here:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ostmortem.html

I have now completed the rebuild of my 5.8 & attempted a re-installation of the engine/trans combo where I did not view clearances I have since been told I should see.

IE, 3/16 - 1/8 -1/4 inch of space to "pull TC to flex-plate" with nuts on TC studs AFTER bell-housing/block plate/block firmly mate.

With that in mind...

What's wrong with this picture:
