Dana 60 Front Rebuild?

Ok guys so I finally found a kingpin dana 60 front from a 79 and took her home. She seems decent. Covered in dirt and stuff from sitting and being used but other then that pretty clean. I will be building this to stuff under my highboy for the cummins swap. I would like to just do everything to the axle to have it ready at once instead of fix one thing here and there and then wait and see what fails next.

I did a search and couldn't find a thread for a rebuild of the axle. Has anyone done it? I know Co425 has and he has been a huge help with my cummins stuff so far. So instead of texting him at 1158 at night I figured id give him break and post on here. I know I need new u joints (or at least want to replace them as well as the wheel bearings). Other then that is there anything else I should be doing to this axle? Also what parts should I look into getting to do a crossover steering.

Thanks!

Edit: I did find this kit by accident. Price wise im not sure if its a good deal or not yet as I haven't looked up the parts individually at any other place but seems complete.

For crossover steering you will need a passenger side high steer arm ($90-$120) and stud kit ($30), also a new drag link & TRE's. There are tons of complete kits out there $$$$$$. Call these guy's for your DIY drag link parts, it's .250 wall DOM tube with weld in threaded bungs for whatever TRE you want http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...yXd8JBnMZ12gDw

That king pin kit looks pretty good. However I would not use their king pin tool. Use this....
WFO "Get Some" Kingpin Remover | Tools | WFOConcepts.com

Those king pins are a royal pain and you'll be lucky if an allen key removes that 36 year old king pin.

Also check out this page for other dana 60 front goodies.

Dana 60 Rebuild parts

and this one for crossover parts.

High steer arms, crossover steering, cross-over, high-steer

Good people run WFO and have bent over backwards in the past to help me get parts.

Thanks Brandon. Lots of goodies for this thing. Is the way you did yours the typical way to rig of the dana 60 or is your steering set up a bit different?

I also see that the dana 44 and dana 60 have the same outer axle shafts? Did you upgrade yours or is that un necessary?

My crossover steering is typical. But I'm running a saginaw box from a early 90's dodge 25-3500 2 wheel drive. Along with a 1.5" dom drag link.

I upgraded my axle shafts to chrome molly 35 spline. Along with the matching yukon locking hubs. I cannot say it's necessary I was in there and they were a good deal, so there they went. One extra thing I could beef up is all.

So the outer axle shafts are 35 spline now too? Was that another ebay deal haha? Or is there a place that has a decent deal on them.

And yea I was on red head, things are getting expensive on there.

Yes 35 spline. I bought the axles as a package with the locking hubs.

My inner axles are chrome molly too and the locks below. The outers and the hubs may have been a kit. I bought all of that stuff at the same time. The bill was huge. Nothing new with my truck.

Yukon Hardcore Locking Hub set for Dana 60, 35 spline. '79-'91 GM, '78-'97 Ford, '79-'93 Dodge | Locking Hubs & Drive Flanges | WFOConcepts.com

If you call WFO they will hook you up with any combo of parts you want.

All the trucks in my front yard have the warn premium hubs. Think the yukons are better? And yea looking over the cost of these dana 60 parts I feel like having a stroke haha. Damn axle can cost as much as the frigin cummins almost!

Yes, I think the yukons are better, and they match the profile of the factory locks.

If I were you I would keep the factory axles and lock outs if they are in good shape, just replace the U joints. This is stuff you can do later. Just rebuild everything else.

I feel ya. I have around $4000.00 in my front axle.

Agreed ^^^^ Yukon hubs are substantially stronger than the Warns. The best feature with the Yukons is "Defaults to locked position" and very low profile.
If your truck is primarily street use then stay with the 30 spline.
