I know it gets talked about a bit and I've been looking through some threads. I have what I believe is and early 99 7.3 super duty 2x4 (all stock) thats is rusting but runs great 210k on it. I was thinking I'd find a southern gas job 4x4 and swap my engine maybe tranny into it. From what I have gotten out of the threads is that wiring will be a problem so I'm wondering if I can completely pull the harness out the the 99? also the dash may need to be swapped witch seams do able wouldn't my dash mount into any 99-03 truck plus pulling the dash will help with removing the harness. And I only have to put one tuck back together in the end. Could do a rhino lined floor or something just clean it with a hose if I need to pull the carpet. Lastly could I just use a manuel transfer case. At the moment I've found an 02 V10 4x4 310k 12 hours south of me for $4000 comes with a sticker located at a small dealer I could drive it home. I appreciate any insight and advice thank you.
There's a reason that hearing about a PSD swap is a rare occurrence. Not that it can't be done, but engine swaps are difficult to begin with and PSDs are more complicated than most.
To answer your question yes it can be done. If you are going to go with a manual T-case then yes just swap all electronics including the whole dash and harnesses. The trans will need to have the 4x4 output shaft swapped into it and the 4x4 spacer transferred from your donor. ( I had to do this with mine.)
Mine took a while because I am never home and would work on it for an hour here and there.
Just click the link to my build thread and it should walk you through.
I found your thread last night (when I should of been sleeping) skimmed through page 4 so far. Which was wear you ran into wiring. Was thinking if I did it at this point I'd try to buy a ready to go 4x4 tranny, maybe even a mildly built one from a local (well know tranny shop). I have a bout 6 grand total invested into my 2x4 at the moment. Had it for around 3 years been a great truck don't really drive it in the winter got a 4x4 Chevy gasser with a plow and I normally drive a 4 cylinder beatter around. If I got he v10 for 4k I could drive that while I take apart the 7.3 witch I still use. And I'd have 10k plus time invested. I haven't explored the forum a ton but figured there might be a for sale section. I'm thinking about trading it in towards a 3rd gen Cummins. I'm just not in to the Fords after 03 or maybe a southern 4x4 7.3. It just bumms me out to see a mint running all stock engine go to waste as a dealer trade.
I hear ya there. It is an investment. If you did the new 4x4 trans you could then sell both the others to offset cost. I am actually in the process of selling off the parts from the donor and my engine and trans.
I need to finish your thread but how hard was pulling the harnnes, did you have to remove more intierer than just the dash? Also are there any major writing differences between an early 99 7.3 and a 99.5-03.5 7.3 that would cause a major problem? I'd hope the being orlder it would be a simpler layout.
Just the dash needs to be removed. as far as the rest of the pin-outs I would have to go through and pull up all my diagrams again. That's what took the longest time is matching all of the pin-outs.
