89 f150 running problem

Hi all,
I've ran in to a problem. First off about the truck. It's a 1989 f150 with the 4.2 duel tank setup. Fuel gauges don't work but that's a fix for later. The problem I'm having around 80 miles after filling the rear tank the gauge starts to work and then the truck starts to act like its out of gas. Yesterday after I filled it, it just shut off on me after maybe a few miles. I was thinking it was maybe the sending unit. But not 100% sure now

1998 or a 1989? I assume the former since the OBS style trucks did not come with a 4.2L engine.

'89 would have been a 4.9L I6. Either way, it may be fuel pump issue or even a vapor lock. It wouldn't hurt to get a fuel pressure reading.

Does it fire right back up? Was it just the one time? The sender issue itself is probably unrelated.

Yeah I think he sender is another problem. I'm going to get some fuel pressure reading tomorrow. Only does it when it's hot, after it cools down it fires right back up

That can be indicative of a vapor lock but fuel pumps can do some funky things at times too.

Very rare for a fuel injected engine to vapor lock. That said, Ford did install a cooling fan on the fuel rail on many of these 4.9L engines. I suggest to check the fuel pressure as well as determine if you are losing spark. Could also be as simple as the connector on the rear tank is making bad connection. Does the truck run on the front tank?

I've never personally worked on one that vapor locked but what he is describing sounds kind of like how I've heard it described. I've heard ethanol fuel can cause this but have no idea if that is correct or not. something about fuel being more volatile and building pressure in the fuel rail.

When I did use the front tank yes it ran, but don't use that one I need a new fill hose for it and haven't really had a need for it

If it runs on one tank and not the other, I would say it's likely the fuel pump.

Or the Dual function Reservoir is bad and the rear tank is filling the front. Does the front tank appear to be full even though you have not filled it? Common problem and can cause running issues.
