Steering Column Ground

Hey Folks-got a weird problem here. A few months ago I had the steering box replaced on my 76' F150. Prior to the repair, the horn worked intermittently, which I believe was caused by a very worn out (plastic pieces all cracked and broken) horn bar. Today my son and I installed a new Grant steering wheel and when we tested the horn, it didn't work. Under the hood, I hooked a jumper wire from the upper part of the steering column across the rag joint to the lower part where it connects to the steering box, and the horn worked. I was trying to figure out how to permanently install the wire and then we noticed that the horn worked without it (when the horn button was pushed). After a brief test drive it stopped working again! Should there be a ground wire attached here? If so,the shop that installed the steering box forgot to reinstall this. Any recommendation on how to do this would be most appreciated-the upper bolts look easy to install a wire connector but not the lower bolts which don't even look like regular bolts.

The OEM rag joint (steering coupler) has a thin copper strip which acts as a jumper. Maybe it broke or lost contact again.

I suggest fabbing a small jumper wire with two, 3/8-inch eyelets and install it to jump across the rag joint. Leave a lil slack but not enough to get hung up on anything.

That did the trick-thanks! I used about a 4" piece of wire and crimped and soldered the eyelets. The pinch bolt on the steering box spline shaft where I connect the lower eyelet had a strange head, but an 11mm 12 point socket fit.
