Ford Extended Warrenty

Did anyone here opt for any of the Ford Extended Service plans? I just spoke with them and quoted roughly $2900 for 3yr/36000 miles. I was just satisfying my curiosity, but i am wondering what you all think about those types of plans....

Thanks!

When I purchased our used Explorer (with 85k miles) a few years back, it came with a 2-year "basic care" plan, which was a Ford-backed power train warranty.

Good thing, too, because it covered several expensive repairs that we needed, including:
* Exhaust manifold
* Torque converter
* Broken valve

Each one of these covered repairs was a 100 deductible, which included covering the rental for the long-term fix for the broken valve as well (that took them almost a week to fix and get back to us)

So that was worth it to me, but I don't know the up-front cost as it was included by the dealer.

It is a highly negotiable item, and a big profit driver for the dealerships. You could probably get them to move down to help your decision, especially if you shop some third party warranties and have prices going into it. If not dropping the price, then increasing the term is another way to go at it.

This. ^

Considering you're only at 79K as I am, the odds of you having $2,900 worth of covered repairs by 115K are virtually zero, unless the truck is a real lemon. Heck I have barely put $2,900 into my Mercury Mountaineer in 9 years and 170K miles - and more than half of that has been in the last 8 months and 15K miles. Even my 4-cylinder Mazda is at 150K without so much as a hiccup. In any case, unless they can bring that price, way, way down or the term way, way up I would pass.

p.s. Just for the sake of comparison, we paid ~$400 for the CPO on our truck, which covers 1 year/12K. Even at the $695 they offered it at, it is considerably cheaper per month than what you're being offered. Also, as I mentioned in my other thread, I negotiated a set of $800 tires as part of my $400 CPO package.

Thank you everyone for the input. K9, I tend to agree with you, just doesnt seem to be worth it. It also requires an inspection ($108 fee) to determine if I have any pre-requisites that must be fixed before they will cover it, and no telling what that may come up with. I am going to pass on it.
