Ignition switch wires are hot!

build thread is in my signature. Have a new motor in, engine and trans have been out and back in, front suspension rebuilt and modified, frame painted etc. hooked up all the wires today with a freshly charged battery and tried to fire it up. No cranky. No power to the S terminal on the solenoid. Jump power to the S terminal and it will crank... Slowly, but it's a fresh motor and in my experience that's somewhat normal.

What has me alarmed is that while back probing the ignition switch I noticed the wires get very hot very quickly when the key is turned on. Like less than a minute and they are too hot to touch.

I haven't modified any wiring other than running a choke wire to the new Holley carb from the factory connector and wiring up a tach - t'd into the "tach/test" wire near the ignition module.

I think the no crank problem is gonna be due to the neutral safety switch out of adjustment as I had to fiddle with the shift linkage due to headers. No clue on the hot wires though

Help!

Not good. Sounds like the S wire is getting grounded somehow, especially if hot to the touch. I'm surprised a fuse did not blow.

Wish I could be of more help. I am suffering from my own electrical gremlin right now.

What wires are getting hot exactly?

I'm pretty sure it's normal for the resistor wire to get hot if you have ignition on engine off. That's why you should use the acc. position if you're not running the engine.

Some circuits to the ignition switch don't have a fuse, except the fusible links on the starter solenoid/relay.

Be careful with it!

I'd pull the dash and un-wrap the harness if need be. Get to the bottom of the problem.

And report back the colour and position on the switch (pics help) will help a lot in diagnosis

It seems to be all the wires where they come right out of the ignition switch. Maybe you shouldn't leave the KOEO in these trucks. I seem to remember leaving the key on in my 78 years ago and the coil blew up. I've solved the no crank condition by adjusting the shift linkage. Going to fire it up and see if the wires are still hot while it's running.

Could it be the resistor wire is the one heating up? that wire runs about 6-8" from the fuse panel harness to about center of dash.
