I have a 2000 F150 4X4 Off Road 5.4L V8 Extended Cab with a paint issue on the hood of my truck. The problem is that it keeps coming up with bubbles in the paint. I have had a FORD dealer repaint the hood twice and it keeps coming back. This is the year when FORD started using the aluminum hoods. Is there anybody who has a similar problem or has any ideas with a solution to this paint problem?
If no one here has any good suggestions for you, you might also want to try asking in the Bodywork forum which is a ways further down on the main forum page.

Dano, sorry I can't help because I don't have that problem and you have described my truck exactly, 2000 F150, ext. cab, 4X4 Off Road. What color is it? Maybe it's a similar problem to the 80's when Ford had to repaint dark blue, grey and black. Although I understood that was a primer problem below the paint. My truck is Deep Wedgewood Blue. I have to thank you for some education, though, I didn't realize I had an aluminum hood.
Hey Dano! Did you learn anything about your paint? Apparently there is some sort of defect in the paint. Look at the posting in the Super Duty and Heavy Duty Forum. They should repaint it for you. We are trying to make a stink so that Ford will not make us go through the paces and just repaint it for us....
I have the same truck but have not had any paint problems. I even live on a dirt road where nicks and dings and minnesota winter salted roads would show up anything right away. I wasn't aware of the hoods being aluminum either. But looks like there is a defect in some of the batches of paint?
It's on the front edje right ? I work in a body shop and the Ford garage in town had us do a warranty claim on one of these, but they didn't have us repaint it, they had us put a new hood on and paint it. Must be something that contaminated the aluminum during the paint proscess at the factory. I have a 99' with a aluminum hood and no problems.
Semi stupid question. Besides the obvious weight difference, what is the tell tale of an aluminum hood. I don't feel like taking mine off and comparing it . Do they all have aluminum hoods after '99?
Aluminum requires a different primer. Normally a Goose crap green Zinc Chormate(sp) primer. I have painted a lot of outboard boat motors, using this as the primer, have not had one peel yet. Its been 200 plus motors. in the last 30 years.
The hood on my 2000 F150 is Alumiunum. Where the sheet metal on the front of the hood wraps underneath, it is only sealed shut by spot welds. Not full adheasive or full weld to seal the seam as the makers do now. So What happened is moisture got under the seam where it should be sealed and started to attaack the aluminum and oxidize the metal...not rust, causing the paint to bubble up in that spot.
I also had my hood repainted but it will keep coming back if the seam isn't sealed completly up...not an easy thing to do.
The Problem I had is the dealer used the wrong epoxy primer the first time which made the paint not want to adhere correctly and after some time (6 months) the paint started to chip off. After bringing it back to the dealer they said sorry and repainted the "right" way....yeah...well a year and 1/2 later..guess what, my hood chiped the size of a quater again..same place as before.
Any ideas?? Maybe they didn't paint it right again.....and Yep..no warrenties..they have expired ..truck and for the paint job.... THANKS FORD For backing your mistake... I guess the Ford Body Shop might not be as good as a indepdant shop.
always learning something new,had no idea my hood was aluminium on my 2000 f-150,so i gave it the magnet test to see.So many things you can learn from your ford f series peers!
