2007 5.4 Cam Phasers

2007 5.4 Cam Phasers
So, my Father in law has a 2007 Navigator with the 5.4 and the dreaded Cam Phaser rattle.
He hates anything to be wrong with his vehicles so he took it to Ford and asked them about it. The told him that he needs to just run it as is because if work on the cam phasers there is a good chance that the motor will destroy itself and he would be looking at a new motor.
Needless to say he was not happy about this.
My question to the forum is... was the local Ford Dealership correct? Is the cam phaser issue a run it till it blows issue?
He is the kind of guy who will NOT live with it. He will trade it off or sell the vehicle. Which is terrible because its a really nice SUV.

Just an FYI to everyone...the motor failed in my FIL's Navigator.
Ford has quoted nearly 8k to install a refurb motor. This motor only has 115k miles on it and has ghosted itself.
