Okay this thing is driving me crazy. The truck is a '95 F 150 with the 5L V8.
About two years ago, I had a new starter installed and everything was fine until about 6 weeks ago, when it went bad.
This time I did it myself since I knew my shop was backed up. The new starter came with a service notice about the end of the ignition wire corroding, leading to premature starter failure, and with about a 6" replacement pigtail. The install went fine and everything worked well for 3 weeks then it wouldn't start again. The key on and just a click. Put a remote starter on and it cranks and starts fine. I traced it down to the pigtail and replaced it. Today, three weeks later the same symptoms again.
I know my crimps are good on the splice when I'm done. And I'm not a mechanical dummy when it comes to working on vehicles. Normally, I have a shop do my cars/trucks just because keeping farm equipment running takes the rest of my time.
Dumb thought maybe?
Your diconnecting battery everytime? When you reinstall battery cables eveything is ok. After three weeks connections loosen up maybe a little corrosion? Jiggle terminal connections on battery and try again.
Short somewhere from starter to battery?

Like I mentioned, it starts fine with a remote starter.
Try shifting the tranny into Neutral...........if it starts fine there, I would assume that you have a problem with the Park switch. I have that problem, intermitantly mine won't start in Park. Shift into Neutral, no problem. I bet the remote circumvents the same switching as going into Neutral like on my '95 F150.
Starter relay? Use a test light grounded to the battery. One side should be hot all the time. With test light on the opposite side of hot, have someone turn the key and see if the relay is switching full juice to that post. Just because you hear a clunk doesnt mean it is getting full contact internally.

Well, the good news is that it's fixed for now. By the time I got home, the end at the ring terminal was hanging loose. Cursed piece of junk!
We were thinking alike. I had already decided that as soon as I had a chance, I was going to make a new pigtail and solder everything. I trust my own work more than something made by the lowest bidder.
