I have a 93 ranger 3.0l 2wheel drive 6 cylinder truck. My gas milage has gone thru the roof and I can smell unburnt fuel while idleing. The engine surges upon a cold startup. It was suggested to me that it might be the injection system causing this. How do you go about tuning the injection system to correct this or is it possibly something else. I do do most maintenace myself but know little about the injection system. Any and all suggestions or help would be greatly apppreciated.
I would start by checking the fuel pressure regulator for a leak, pull of the vacuum line and look for gas, gas = bad. Next check for high fuel pressure. Then I would pull the codes to see if you get an O2, MAF, etc code. Also check for exhaust leaks. You can not "tune" the injection system, the ECU determines the mixture based on the sensor readings.
