Waste Gate Slam

Hey guys I have posted on here a few times but for the most part I just lurk and like learning what I can from others. I have a Gen 2 2011 F350 CCSB with just at 67k. I had a weird whinning noise coming from the truck during cold starts resonating from the down pipe when I first purchased the truck at 42k. I had purchased the truck used and noticed this noise immediately. Ford replaced my turbo under warranty about 53k and it corrected the issue. However, recently within the pass 10k I have noticed while driving a constant speed, at about 1300-1500 RPM with a constant turbo boost with a nice whistle I hear what sounds like the waste gate slamming. I have seen a few videos on youtube with the same issue that I will post the link to. Should I get this corrected immediately? It doesn't sound good at all when it happens. It is very hard to duplicate the sound so if I left the truck with ford I'd be worried they would have to duplicate the fault before fixing it which I don't think they would be able to do. Would they need to replace the waste gate to fix this? The guy in video says its the programming of the PCM, which I did just get the latest recall done where they reprogrammed the PCM and that as at about 10k ago. Tuck has an S&B Intake but all stock other then that. Any help, advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Mine is a little more violent, like the 4:20 clip

If you are still under a warranty (original or extended), I would definitely get it checked out soon. Something is not right and it may lead to other issues. Even if you are not under warranty I would save up a little pocket change and at least get it looked at by a reputable diesel tech somewhere. You don't want to get stranded somewhere after a major failure of some kind. Just my 2 cents. -Glenn

Hi Vreeland11,

Can you make this sound happen reliably when driving at constant speed? If so, take your tech along for a test drive so you can demonstrate it for them. Come back and tell us how things go at the dealership; I'll be here if you need me to step in and assist.

Does it happen with constant rpm's or when you let your foot off the gas? The waste gate shouldn't be open at that rpm range

Thanks Crystal, I have talked with a local ford dealer a few weeks ago about the sound and said if it contiued I'd like a diesel tech to ride with me, but it is very difficult to duplicate. I will be in tocu if i have issues. Also it does seem to be happen more noticeably when I'm letting of the accelerator.

Is this your first diesel? What it sounds like to me is turbo bark. In which case you have no issue. Especially if it happens when you let off the throttle at boost. The video was a 6.7 Cummins so you can't really compair to these trucks. But going off sound alone from the video makes me think its just turbo bark. Your waste gate should not be open unless you reach high boost pressure enough to let excess pressure out.

Not my first diesel but it's been a while so I would say I'm pretty new. I would just be curious of why it would be "barking" now and has never done it before. Can you explain to me what a turbo bark is and if there is any issues that would arise from it?

Just looked into the turbo bark and watched some videos. That sounds like that may be it. Can this cause any damage? Thanks blapenese

Put your stock intake back on it and see if it still does it.

Hey everyone just wanted to give an update. The noise is occurring on a daily basis now. I've determined it is definitely not a turbo bark. I'm not driving it hard at all and it is more of a grinding noise. I took it to ford and they want me to put the stock intake back on to see if it still does it. I feel like that will be a complete waste of my time though so I'm going to a second dealer to get another opinion. They mentioned something about a "VGT" going bad when you put in a new turbo. I'm unfamiliar with this. Any input? Thanks

Here is a video I took of the noise. It happens at 19-20 seconds right after the car passes. I can duplicate it by letting off the throttle but it still occurs even at a highway speed rpm and is a lot more violent. I have not had time to make it to the second dealer for another option. I still think it's not the CAI causing the issue. Any ideas? Thanks for any input in advance

You haven't taken it to the dealer yet? I thought that was what you were going to do?
