How often does it clean the exhaust filter?
In the month I've had it, I've put around 1,700 miles on it. (I have a 150 mile daily commute). I don't tow anything, and am doing approximately 75% freeway driving at 75-ish mph.
I've noticed the truck say "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" about 4 or 5 times since I've owned it. I have a SCT ScanGuage on it, and have put in the codes to monitor the EG Sensors.. I do see a significant increase in temperature than normal after this message is displayed, then after a while it eventually does drop down to normal. So I'm 99% sure it's completing the cleaning cycle each time this message comes up.
But my main question: How often do these trucks clean the exhaust filters? Does 4 or 5 times in 1,700 miles sound right?
When soot builds up to a certain point, as monitored by various sensors, regen starts. It dumps in extra fuel on the exhaust stroke on the right head, it burns hot as it flows down the exhaust pipe intentionally. It is incinerating the soot.
When you tow heavy, you burn more fuel and exhaust is hotter (usually above 700 degrees versus mid to high 500's empty) unless you have a tail wind. Above 700, more like 750 degrees, passive regen occurs and soot levels are actually reduced as you drive. Passive regens do not send messages to the ford screen. Even with passive regens, Ford prompts an active one every 500 miles or so. This is because the passive may keep the soot hovering in the 70-85% of plugged range. Active clears it out again to close to zero.
Short trips around town empty, you can see an active regen every 100 miles or so.
Your active regens are in the ball park.
These trucks are designed to be working. They really aren't working at highway speeds when empty, even if they weigh 10k; unless you have a very very stiff head wind. Yes, they could be designed for empty usage, but I suspect specs would look wimpy and performance would be terrible when loaded.
