Cleaning Exhaust Filter

I have just over 500 miles on my truck and today was the second time I've seen the Cleaning Exhaust Filter in the message center. It seems that both times the filter is cleaned my fuel mileage seems to drop, is this a normal condition? I've read a little in the manual that the CPU raises the exhaust temp to clean it out. Didn't know if it uses more fuel to do this or not.

During active regeneration, the one bank of the engine injects extra fuel on the exhaust stroke to fuel the fire so to speak in order to raise EGT high enough to burn off the soot buildup in the DPF. Decreased fuel economy during active regen is normal.

Wow, 500 miles and twice cleaned already?! Seems kinda high. You using old tranny fluid for fuel!?
