Power Steering Fluid Check

Hello All, I have a question about checking the power steering fluid......maybe i'm old school!!!! i used to always check the power steering fluid while the motor was running. I just changed the fluid and put in a new pump......so for giggles i read the manual on that, and it says to check it while the motor is off WTF!!!!! and it says too check the cold side of the dipstick. i always thought the cold side was for when you first started the motor and the hot side was for when the motor was up to temp, the manual says nothing about the hot side of the dipstick.

So if any of you gurus out there can shed some light i sure would like to know what is the correct way to check this fluid........Hot and Cold cold side of the dipstick

Thanks

I always checked mine with the engine off. Engine on and up to temp for the tranny.
Other then that...If you put in a new OEM pump...make sure you use tranny fluid in it, not PS fluid.
