The passenger side mirror in our '93 E150 lost vertical adjustment and stability. I pulled the glass and found the tabs that hold the big ball joint are toast. Also, the lower post with small ball joint moves freely in its holder - the slightest push sends it all the way into the frame. The right edge post takes a good push to move and resists properly when I snap the mirror in place. Does this sound like something a new glass section will fix or do I need a new mirror assembly?
For less than $50 you can get a new one. I got THIS about 2.5 years ago and it fits and works perfectly. Just check year compatibility. It vibrates less than the oem driver side.
That mirror isn't compatible with his vehicle. I searched the internet from one end to the other and was never able to find an electric mirror for my 92 E 150. Maybe somebody here can direct you a source. If so, they would do us all a huge favor.

Not sure which internet you were checking but mirrors from '92 > '02 tend to be the same 3 studded mounting, 2003 beginning the 4 stud mounting system. Coincidentally the dual element mirrors along with extendable towing mirrors were first available beginning '03.
The mirror shown in the Amazon link should work just fine on a '93 door.

I searched the same one everyone else uses. If you go to the Amazon link and enter "1993 E150" the result is "not compatible." I'm not sure why because the bolt pattern is the same as manual mirrors (3 bolt). Could it be that the electrical connections don't match?
i'll defer to your experience with auto glass--just wish I'd known that a while back.
James I'm not sure how those "compatibility" charts are generated but I suspect one minor deviation from one model or trim level to another renders some parts incompatible. This is an okay practice for sites like Amazon or in some cases eBay since most customers would tend to be very inexperienced with auto repair in general. Opting for an exact plug & play fit of a part reduces parts being returned because they didn't work to some expectation.
The electrical connectors could be 100% the same in appearance but Ford has been known to rearrange wires in connectors. When perfectly mated together the connected device won't work because its "mis-wired" due that minor change.
Sometimes before buying something online its best to consult those of us who've been there, done that and can walk you through it. Of course that sometimes takes a day or two to get all answers.
I'm surprised that rockauto.com doesn't offer an electric mirror. They're about $35 at the pick-n-pull when available. eBay has used OE and new aftermarket for about $35 as well. Question is, am I better off with a good used mirror or take a chance on a cheap knock-off? Or, force fit a later split mirror since I'm not concerned about symmetry. Is a 4 bolt mirror a matter of drilling holes and replacing connectors?

I do not know about any other knock outs, but the one from the link I posted was great. Movement of the motors, no vibration, fit and finish, everthing was good. I've been using it for two years with no issue.
I ordered the 2003 mirror because of the extra wide angle mirror and it is not an easy fit. It is not a problem of drilling holes. The door has two "skins" . One mirror bolts to the external skin and has big holes for the nuts on the internal skin and the other bolts on the internal "skin" and has big holes on the external skin for the tabs. (Hopefully you get the picture). Not an impossible task, but I didn't see the cost/bennefit advantage. I return it adn got the right one for my 2000 e150
There's more than a few who've tried or completed cobbling together a re-fit of pre-2003 door shells to fit 2003 and later mirrors. At best its a mess and in the end just not worth all the time spent doing it.
The problem then becomes if those modifications adversely affect the specified mirror's mounting making it not as fixed in place as original.
The idea of different "skins" is the door shell is a structure that houses a number of sub-systems as well as being reinforced in places it will experience forces that need to be addressed; mirror mounting is just one of those concerns.
Most will ignore the advice to find and replace pre-03 doors with newer versions if the later mirror types is a big desire. Even though its "easy" to chop into an existing door shell and install the later mirrors the best approach would be installing a door shell better suited to carry them.
I pulled the mirror for a better look and ended up fixing it! The center pivot clips are in bad shape but still hold. It's back together and working so I get to delay replacement. Good because I'm hoping to replace the van entirely with a long body rather than one part at a time
Well that didn't last. I popped the glass onto the frame a couple more times but the broken tabs are beyond toast. I bought a Kool-Vue replacement saving a couple of bucks on eBay over the Amazon link shared by GreeVan (thanks!). I monitored row52.com for a couple of weeks but area yards have manual mirror vans. The price of used electric mirrors comes to $40 after tax and fees but I'd have pried off the glass.
