3rd brake light leaking

Anyone else have an issue with their third brake light leaking. The shop priced 275ish to replace/fix leak. I figured a 5 dollar tube of clear OSI would do stop the leak just as well. Anyone have any reason why I shouldn't just seal the brake light instead of replace.

This is so beat to death there are many threads on it. Mine leaked on my 04 and my 2010 I fixed both with weather stripping I bought at Home Depot. Cost me like $5 and is super easy. I'll post the link to the thread where I put the exact product I used. Haven't leaked since and it's been close to a year. Here's just one of the many threads. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ght-a-fix.html

Sweet. I actually have a roll of that same weather stripping in my basement. I had just never thought to use it. I'll give that a try before I use any kind of silicone.

My truck I just bought on may 15th has this issue (found out last weekend when I took for its first car wash) and I barked at the dealership I bought it at. They are going to pay for repairs even though it was a used truck. I noticed my lens is cracked/broken on the top for my third brake/cargo light.

3rd brake light leak

2009 XLT 4.6. Mine leaked as well. Noticed stains on headliner and could not figure out where water was coming in from. This forum helped a lot! bead of silicone around the inside of the lense, waited for it to set a bit, screwed back in place and 5 years now leak-free. Bad design by Ford.

Their ABS wiring on the front right wheel could've been 1" longer so it didn't have to rub up against the knuckle and cost me to replace it after 5 years. Way to go Ford engineers!!! Brutal!

I just replaced the seal with the weather stripping. I have the premium care warranty with the truck but from what I have read since posting this. I might as well go ahead and fix it myself now anyway.

Used the 1/4 stuff from lowes or home depot. One continuous run from bottom center of light back to bottom center. Some recommend the 3/8 thick stuff but the 2/8 thick stuff seemed to work fine with good compression when the screws were snugged. Frost King is one of the door and window weather strip brands that will work.

I may go ahead and do this as preventative maintenance. I have some butyl tape left over from the rear power window swap.

I fixed it myself. I put weatherstripping and got rid of the old gasket. I like it cause I didn't use gasket making paste. Here is a link of me doing it
