Steering Problems

hello
iowa 7.3 here
been awhile
but all has been well till now

in the last month i've noted the steering will
suddenly turn one way or the other without provacation!!
it doesn't always do this

took it in and they fixed the drag link end
but the steering is still acting up
it's a little scarry

could it be the steering sector?
or a bad tire?
or?

thanks

dave

Check the Caliper Slide Pins for seizing.

Check the front axel/knuckle u joints. When they start to go you get the EXACT symptoms you are describing, even with the hubs unlocked.

X2 for checking the caliper slide pins or the caliper itself could be seized. Just had to replace my caliper cause it was doing the same thing and caused my inner axle seal to leak. Have you checked the wheel for heat after driving? I experienced pulling to the right after driving for 15 min and when I got out and walked around the front of my truck I could feel the heat from the wheel, it was so hot I couldn't even touch it.

Suggestions from my Les Schwab Tire buddy: Is there play in the wheel? If there is a little it could be one of the U-joints in the steering shaft (generally the one closest to the steering gear box), the steering box its self, bad tie-rod end? Check your tire wear, the weight of our motor will show up quickly on the tires if something is sloppy below the steering gear box.

I have been chasing a sloppy steering wheel for awhile, replaced the gear box, replaced the drag link with a bigger beefier one. I will be working on mine tomorrow and will post if I can find my issue, might help you.

My tires are wearing great, no issues, just a wandering issue, happens with camber in the road, changing lanes on the freeway with that center break-over angle is a doozie without looking drunk lol...

Just went through this same scenario with a truck, and it ended up being a seized axle shaft u-joint.

That sounds like ball joints to me.

lots of things to check out!

i can describe the problem as:

'a gentle tugging, one way or another, for brief periods'

it is gentle, nothing dramatic
i can take my hands off the steering wheel
an suddenly, the steering wheel will turn about 3-4"
one way or another.
this hardly affects the direction the truck is going

i did have the drag link arm replaced
and this didn't help
they checked all the linkages etc.

don't know if they checked the upper and lower ball joints
if not, i'll have them check these as well
and i'll have the u-joints checked etc.

thanks for the responses

It's not ball joints if your tires are wearing OK, one tire would be shredded on the inner or outer edge...have someone play with the wheel while you look at the components around the steering box, drag link just keeps the chassis centered over your axle, not a direct steering linkage related piece but the factory ones are puny so it's great you got a replacement!

it turned out to be the front axle u-joints!!
mechanic had to split the caps to get them out.
drives straight and true now!!

mechanic did tell me that the farmers
change to 4-wheel drive when it happens to them
and they pound over a very rough field
to loosen up the frozen joint
and this tides them over for a few weeks
before they bring their truck in for u-joint replacements

thanks for all your help
