i do not trust chiltons or haynes manuals, there are too many mistakes in them for my liking.
i just checked the factory service manual.
and i was rite, and wrong.
the F-150/ bronco D-44 with auto hubs and F-250/F-350 D-50/D-60 with manual hubs use two nuts with the retainer ring.
the D-44 with manual locking hubs only uses one nut.
My F150's dana 44 with factory auto hubs most definitely had two lock nuts and a the lock ring.
It's important to torque the nuts properly, especially the inner nut, as the inner nut is what sets preload on the wheel bearing, and the outer nut keeps the inner from loosening, in addition to the lock ring. Too much preload on the wheel bearings will cause them to fail prematurely.
