Well odd to me atleast. after turning a corner or going over bumps i am hearing a bang coming from the trans. It only does this under load and its not in sync with shifts. I know my way around an engine compartment but never got into transmission work. any ideas would be helpful, thanks
Thanks for the reply. I don't suspect the suspension due the type and location of the noise. Also the noise or noises seem to be a little forward of the T/C. I say noises because today I noticed there are three spots left right and middle. All seem to be at or near the firewall. Other things to note the od off light starts flashing at or around 50mph and there was a slight slip between 2nd and 3rd that has gone away ever since the banging started. I have only owned this truck for a month
You might want to find someone (or a shop) with a ChassisEAR. That system consists of microphones that you can mount at various locations, then switch between them while listening through headphones to determine where the noise or noises are loudest. Then move the microphones closer to that location and repeat until the location is pinpointed. I used this method to determine the transfer case was the source of a popping noise on a friend's 1996 Explorer.
i was so far unable to find a chassisear but after more driving i am starting to think this might be a 4wd problem. there are loud mechanical bangs at each wheel but only if i am at rpm of 2000 or higher after a turn or after hitting a bump. I never get a 4wd light an all tires are the same size and properly inflated. i have seen a plug on the driver side rear of the T/C thinking about unpluging it then test driving just unsure of any adverse effects this may cause or maybe there is a fuse i could pull instead
Also the noise or noises seem to be a little forward of the T/C.
A little forward of the torque converter (T/C) is the engine.

The flashing OD OFF light means transmission codes have been stored. You need to know what codes to be able to fix this. The places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
Ok so onto the next problem which actually is a trans problem. after driving for about 10 mins or so the o/d off light begins to flash. when this light is flashing my truck wont downshift into first when at a stop. i usually shift into neutral then back into drive which gets me into first. but if i shut the truck off then start it right up i get another 10 mins or so of problem free driving until that light starts flashing again. the fact that the problem goes away after restart make me think that it shouldnt be mechanical
If so, I'm guessing you're looking for someone to tell you what's wrong. All I can tell you from your description is something is wrong. If you want more detail than that you need to get the codes read. Even if the light isn't flashing the codes will be in memory.

I had a similar problem with my 99 when it shifted, eventually it started slipping in reverse and I got more than one shop tell me I needed a tranny rebuild. I found an excellent shop and the owner operator immediately surmised that the valve body gasket had blown, replaced it for a nominal cost of $200 and the truck functions flawlessly.
