98 explorer awd 5.0L
Was driving at 55mph last eve. and heard this god-alful noise from underneath. It was a sort of a roar and was not a consistent noise. Later it was like a rubbing, grinding noise such as in time to the rotation of the drive train. Can't pinpoint as to just where the noise is originating. Has anyone had this same happening....maybe its getting too close to Halloween! Any ideas. Thanks, Maryjames52

I don't know much about the AWD systems on these since mine is a 4x4, but I would suspect the transfer case and would check it out first. I would try to pinpoint a little closer as to where the noise is coming from ie is it from one of the corners or is it coming from the middle underneath, is there any other symptoms going along with it ie is the transmission still working properly and shifting all right. I'm sure there will be others with more input/insight as to what could be going on there.

Thanks Brian 06328.......Those are words (transfer case)that I dread to hear. I haven't pinpointed the exact area yet where the noise is coming from. Tranny shifts good and vehicle runs and drives OK. Maryjames52
