Idiots

So just picked up a 400. Noticed a knock... New timing set installed less than 1000 miles before I bought the truck. Tore it down and cam gear bolt was finger tight. Removed it and cam retainer is missing(presumably in pieces in pan) and block is broken. Cam gear been movin all over the place. See pic. *******es... The world is full of em! Motor runs strong and has good compression but I guess now I'm lookin at maybe a crate motor. Any suggestions?

U can see one spot in pic but several places where gear was milling into block. The shop that did the work also reinstalled old water pump and belts that were waaayyyy old, possibly original IMO.

You might be able to have it welded and repaired, depending on how bad the casting is damaged. That is very unfortunate, however. I would certainly investigate the repair route before jumping on a crate engine.

How much thread is left in the bottom of the hole? If some left, maybe not a lot to do with the help of some Loctite?

Drilled a lil deeper n tapped. Used red loctite then filled gap w job weld. Maybe get time to clean oil pan n reinstall everything this week. Then hope for the best!

The job weld (or something similar) would've been my next suggestion. Don't get why it broke in the first place as while there is a thrust load from the cam, even just a few threads should be enough.

Broke because cam gear was loose as well as installed inside out! Guy paid a "mechanic" to change timing set just before I purchased the truck...
