Some more FE questions.......
1) I have replacement bolts for the cam plate that holds the cam in at the front of the block, how much space should there be from the bolt head to the cam timing gear? Its very close but it is clearing the gear.
2) How tight should the cam be once the cam plate and the freeze plug at the back of the block are installed? Should there be any lateral movement at all?
3) What is the torqe supposed to be for the bolt that holds the cam timing gear to the cam?
4) There is three oil holes at the rear of the block surronding the rear of the cam, should these be exposed or plugged?
5) How do you remove the old crank gear and install a new one? There is a little pin thing thats wedging it on, do I just tap it out and then tap it back in to install the new crank gear?
6) There is a smalle metal dowel that connects the cam to the cam timing gear. How far should this dowel be sticking out when the cam timing gear is installed?
Thank you so much for the help this website is invaluable to me. I wouldnt be building my new engine if it werent for the guys at FTE. Thanks your the best!

1. If the gear clears when it is pushed as far as it will go toward the bolts, you are fine.
2. The cam should turn freely, but there should be VERY little or no lateral movement.
3. The general consensus seems to be 45lbs.
4. The three holes need to be plugged. Otherwise you are going to shoot pressurized oil out the back of the block.
5. The crank gear (timing gear?) is held in place, to prevent spinning, by a key. Tap (or pull) it off, tap it on. They can be fairly tight.
6. I can't answer this one. I can't remember if the dowel drives the fuel pump eccentric or not.
Hope this helps.
