5.0 timing gear problem

Im not that great with the vocabulary so try to stay with me. i took everything off to look at the timing chain and i found the the gear that was suppost to be on the cam was not on it. i looked a little closer and the little pin that turns the cam had bent to about a 90 degree angle. im not the most experienced mechanic since i am only 17 and only been looking at engines for about a year now. my thinking is that the cam somehow locked up and threw the gear off. what would have caused this to happen? or am i even right to think that the cam stopped? any feedback would be appreciated.

there should be a center bolt with a fuel pump ecentric that holds the cam gear on. is it broken off in the cam? if it isnt it may be down in the pan. i cant ever rember a dowell pin bending but i guess it could happen. what happened to the motor? did it just quit, or was it not running when you got it. check the end of the cam where the dowell pin goes, it may be cracked, broken, or the hole may be elongated. if it is any of the above it will have to be replaced. if the hole is not messed up insert a new pin, and see if you can rock the cam back and forth with the gear. dont try to turn it too much or it will pinch your fingers. if it will move remove the valve covers and the rocker arms and turn it a few times. watch the pushrods and see if all of them move. if they do, put everything back together with a new timing set and see if it will run. if the retaining bolt broke you will have to clean the oil pan out.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Nov-02 AT 04:28 PM (EST)]A common cause for the valve train to lock up is the oil pump. But everytime I have seen this happen, it stripped the distributor gears. So more than likely this is not your problem, but it might be worth a few minutes to see if the oil pump is locked up.
