My ABS light came on about 3 months ago. I searched through old posts about the problem and found that the majority of the time it was the rear sensor which is located on top of the rear differential housing. Autozone is not able to pull the codes for the ABS system. Since Ford wanted $85 dolloars just to hook it up and diagnose it, I took the gamble and spent the $20 for a new rear sensor which was very simple to install. The light went out and has been working fine since.
I searched for "rear sensor" with AutoZone and NAPA. Closest part I found is an $11 "ABS Transmission Sensor". Do you think this is what I'm looking for? I also ran across a "Vehicle Speed Sensor" for $37 but that didn't sound right.
I haven't yet picked up a Haynes manual. My truck is more than four years old and has never shown any sign of wear. Haven't needed it.
Anyway, I climbed underneath tonight to inspect the area. Is the part you changed literally right on top of the rear gear, facing the cab? If so, what tools did you need to detach it and are there any special clips I need to protect? Does the wire attached simply pop off or is it retained by something?
None of those parts you listed sounds right. I don't think you can get this sensor at Autozone or Napa. I think you can only get it from Ford. Should only be around $20. The sensor sits right on top of the differential housing and has a wire connector attached to it, so what you saw sounds like it. It is secured down with a 10mm bolt I believe. Remove the connector. Be careful of the plastic clip part of the connector as it could be brittle and break easily. I used a ratchet with a short extension to remove the bolt. Then pull the sensor out. It will not come right out. There will be some resistance because of an O ring around it. Just put the new sensor back in, secure it down with the bolt and plug the connector back in. That's all there is to it. You might lubricate the O ring with motor oil to make it go back in easier. I don't know whether you have 4 wheel ABS or just he rear wheel ABS. Keep that in mind. If you have 4 wheel ABS, one of your front sensors could be bad instead. They are a lot more expensive. There are other reasons why your light may be on. As I stated in my previous post, after searching around I found that probably about 99% of the problems were that rear sensor going bad. That is why I tried replacing that first as it was the cheapest. Good luck!
Lago_F150's instructions were dead on. Solved the ABS light problem with just a few minutes work. Thanks again for the help!
For those of you who run into this down the road, the "rear sensor" is indeed available at Napa for $10.69. It's manufactured by United Brake Parts and called an "ABS Transmission Sensor". United produces these for the factory... it even comes in a FoMoCo plastic pouch.
