Engine swap options

I've decided to swap the engine out on my 82 F100 flairside. It currently has an engine from a 76 in it that a PO swapped (4.9 inline 6). I would like to replace it with another inline, what year models will be the most straight forward? Looking to stay around $500.

Another good place to ask that question is here:

Thanks, I posted there, also if anyone knows, would it be possible to drop my flareside bed in place of a straight side and what that would take, would it be easier than an engine swap? Just trying to consider all my options.

If it bolts into the frame the same way I don't see why not, take some measurements and draw a diagram of where your bolts are located and compare it to where the bolts are located on a straight side, I'm sure someone on here would be willing to take some measurements on theirs. Swapping beds is not a hard process at all, it only took me about an hour to get mine off with some help from my friends! All you need is a few people to help you left the beds on and off! Why do you want to switch to a straight side? I love the look of the flare side pickups personally

I wanna keep the flareside, but only can find straightsides for sale around me, so if I found one that ran decent with a good cab I could just drop my bed on it.

And the engine has a bad head from being extremely hot way too often ( was my only vehicle and I didn't have money to fix the head gasket at the time). It was so warped that it was going to take ~40 thousandths of shaving to bring it flat, but it ended up being cracked with a giant chunk missing from inside an exhaust port, which ended up cracking the exhaust too. It still ran and drove until the day I pulled the head off though. Just would hydrolock orboverheat if I drove it longer than 15 minutes.

So for the cost of another head and exhaust I can find a used engine or whole nother truck essentially, since my lower end probably isn't in the best shape anyways.

Ah ok I Gotchya, surprised that happened, I was always under the impression that the straight 6s were tanks, if you live anywhere near butler pennsylvania there's a HUGE yard of bullnose's most of which have the 6s, there's at least 150 trucks there. I live a decent distance from it but it's always worth a drive!
