Wowza, you all pretty much killed that discussion! This is a forum for opinions and experience, we should be more considerate of each other's opinions and experiences. I've learned a lot of from others on this forum. Glad I don't use the rat pee aka DEF anymore.
I guess mine will be going into limp mode soon. I don't buy def at WalMart or any others. I fill up at a local truck stop and after every third tank or so I fill the def tank too. Price for def around here in the pump is right at $2.50 per gallon vs $5.00 per gallon at WalMart. I never check to see if it's under half tank or not. I just fill it.

Pretty much typical forum behavior. I try not to be that guy but if I run into someone with a holier than thou attitude, I have no problem calling them out. You should see the attitude I faced in the general section on the subject of the epa and tuners. I'm not done yet there but that's another story.
But all in all, most dudes are cool here. You're always going to have some bad apples. Just like in life.
Obviously you haven't read the owner's manual. Go to page 21 and continue reading on. There's even a chart that will tell you when to leave it alone, and when to refill:
I've seen quite a few fleets and individuals try the same thing you suggest, only to see their trucks in for service with a full DEF tank and in limp mode with miles to empty at zero. Ask about their maintenance, and some top their DEF off as often as every fuel fill up.
I used to fill mine when I got the 1/2 full message. After doing that a couple of times, I was driving home from work and received the "500 miles to empty" message. Feeling perplexed, got home and using the Ford nozzle, I was only able to add about a 1/2 gallon. Luckly after a short drive, it reset itself to full without a trip to the dealer. So now I fill sometime between 500-200 miles to empty.
As I've always expected - this has got to be one of the most ridiculous systems any manufacturer has ever put in a vehicle. For crying out loud, the technology to measure fluid in a tank has been around for 200 years. It's the trying to build a better mousetrap syndrome deal - why. Don't get me wrong, thanks for the explanation, really appreciate it and as others have mentioned, makes sense now. I always fill mine when I get the 200 mile warning. But for the life of me, I just don't get why all the electronics? Put a freaken cork on a rod, measure the level and show that level on a gauge in the dash.
I'm thinking folks that fill theirs all the time don't experience a problem because they are always filling it. If that 1st or second electrode ever was exposed the truck would freak out and start messing with the warning messages.
