Codes: P0345 and P0349

Hi Folks,

For 2009 and 2010 f150's with the 5.4L engine, this may apply to you.

About a month back I got some odd vibrations at start-up and while driving and the following codes:
  • P0345 - Camshaft Position Sensor, Bank 2 (drivers side), circulation error
  • P0349 - Camshaft position Sensor, Bank 2 (drivers side), circulation Interim.
These codes are common in the previous generation truck for various reasons. In my case, I started trying to troubleshoot with the easiest solutions first.

Checked the battery - fully charged.
Checked/played with the alternator connection and related wiring - looked good.
Checked the oil - it was down at the half mark on the dipstick, so toped it off with synthetic oil.

Cleared the codes, and now have been driving for a month, no issues, no codes!

If these codes come up for other folks, try the easiest on the list first, before bringing to the dealer... these codes can be really hard to solve, but sometimes we can get lucky.

How has that lasted for you? Looking at truck with similar issue. Thanks.

Once I cleared the codes, they never came back (over 4 months ago). But after a couple months and in particular, hot summer weather, the truck started to vibrate really badly at idle. I think its related to the VCT solenoid and phaser issues and low oil pressure issues. Based on the codes / possible causes:

- Faulty Camshaft Position Sensor
- Camshaft Position Sensor harness is open or shorted
- Camshaft Position Sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Variable Cam Timing (VTC) Solenoid
- Faulty starter motor
- Starting system circuit
- Dead (Weak) battery

While the codes never came back, I went through a number of possible fixes for the rough idle, which has gotten a little worse over time. When getting these codes, it seems other folks on the forums have fixed it with the most recent VCT solenoid and new motorcraft plugs if they were never changed.

If this doesn't work, it can be tricky to diagnose and fix. Everything from alternator diode issues, to replacing the sensor (it often isn't the sensor) to checking the wires and connections etc. If you have any other issues with the codes like rough idle when hot outside may give you more leads.

Thanks. I haven't noticed a rough idle. I have noticed maybe a hesitation or two, but hard to tell as it's very slight. I am going to get someone else to look at it for me.

Re-reading your post, that doesn't sound good. "Tricky to diagnose and fix" usually means more serious oil/engine issues. Also, when you say, you "went through a number of possible fixes," does that mean you did the solenoid and plugs and it didn't work??

I have the same issue/error codes on my 2010 F150 XL 4x4. My concern is
at start up, the engine makes a dieseling or knocking noise. Sometimes it goes
away after a few seconds but there are times it continues until I give it a little gas. I made the mistake of putting in gear while the engine was still making the noise and as a result, I got the cam shaft position error. My battery is new, I recently changed the oil, I do use synthetic oil.
Anybody have this problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried replacing the sensor itself?

I did that, knock on wood, the light has not come back yet.

Codes P0345

No I haven't. I think the sensor is doing it's job, it's the dieseling noise the motor makes at startup that concerns me. Would a faulty sensor cause the motor to run rough and make that noise, it sounds like the rods or lifters are knocking.

I'm not sure if it can make the noise or not, but I can say that it can cause rough running/misfiring. It's a $20 part, so I decided to change it and see what happened.
