FWIW the power steering assist that you are describing was a "factory" set up. It utilized a power steering pump, a steering push n pull ram to proved the power assist to the steering box. This style was used until the early 77 My. The cross over steering box style was used starting with the mid 77 MY and on. But is still a power assist design.
Also swapping a bump side body to dent side chassis will be far more involved than it would be to just change the steering boxes on the bump side chassis. That is because the wheel base of the dent side chassis is 2" longer then it is on the bump side chassis. Which would not only require the "bed spacer" that the o.p. mentioned, but will also require either re-drilling the bed bolt holes, or adding brackets to bolt the bed in the factory bed floor mount locations. Not only to move them back the 2", but also because the frames of the mid 77-79 trucks are also wider then they are on the older highboy trucks. Then you'll need to extend the frame rails at the back to fully support the bed and to attach a rear bumper. Then you'll also need to lengthen the wire harness for the lights to the bed and rear bumper as well. Just so you are fully aware of the work required to make this all work.
