I know that this question has been asked many times and in many ways, but I need a bit of advice.
Until recently, I had a '99 PSD that I used for commuting and for towing our 11,000# 5th wheel. I have an SCT X3 handheld reprogrammer that I was never unhappy with. Sure, it was a bit of a bother to switch from Performance to Towing, but it worked for me.
Here's the deal; when my '99 got up-close and personal with a large oak tree, I was unable to deprogram it, leaving the reprogrammer married to the old truck. In order to divorce it from the old truck so that I can use it on the replacement truck, I'd have to send it in and pay a $150.00 unlock fee.
I'm wondering if the other options out there are a big enough improvement over what I had as to warrant saving my nickles up and purchasing something I'd be happier with in the long run. The idea of being able to just twist a selector **** to change performance is for sure appealing. I've actually read that someone has developed a "Drive through" mode where I wouldn't have to shut the truck off to order a burger.
Any advice or anecdotes you'd like to share would be appreciated. (Tomorrow, I may post the question of 'which oil is best')
I use the TSPERFORMANCE Chip, got it through Riff Raff, They can give you any tune you want with 6 selections by twisting the ****. I went 1) stock 2) hi Idle 3)50hp 4)75hp 5)100hp 6)150hp coal rolling monster, but if you go on there web site. Diesel Performance Specialists they will walk you through what they can do for ya, what future mods you have mind, ect. Install took less than an hour if you know your way around the PCM and I wouldn't trade it for anything and if you want you can stack, go through the OBD connector with something else, and make sure you tell them everything you have on your truck. I forgot that I have the Banks trans command, when I installed a beefed up unit and a Bank billet converter, now when I am past 100hp and getting into it I spin tires on the 1st to 2nd shift, with 35 inch tires and a detroit locker in the rear. I know something is going to break. Doug at TS offered to redo the program for free, but I and going to take the Trans command out and give it to someone at FTE. I have a tendency to give stuff away I dont need or use, to help people with tight budgets. That my 2 cents. good luck
