I have a 1997 f250 7.3 super cab long bed and I use it every day.. Air conditioner has worked like a champ all the time I have had it. Yesterday it would not turn on.. The clutch on the compressor does not even try to engage. Checked the fuses and number 1 is blown.. I put in 3 fuses and they all blew immidiatly. I was going to see if it would work if I put a wire where the fuse goes and it sparked pretty good so I left it alone lol.. It has worked normal until yesterdAy. Whst should I do first? And Thank you in advance for any advice..
first thing i would do is determine what that fuse is for. if it is for the AC, try unplugging the clutch, then put a fuse in. if it does not blow, you know the clutch is shorted out.
Ok so heres what I did. I unplugged both terminals on the compresser, took the ac/blower motor switches out of the dash and unplugged them, and there is still a short it just blowes the fuse.. What do you think? I have looked at all the wires that I can see physicly and cannot see anything wrong..
Ok so it turns out there there was a penny in the cigar lighter in the ashtray angled just right and was making a short and blowing the fuse lol.. Took the penny out and the air conditioner started working; a/c clutch started engaging. I turned it off and on a few times and it was doing fine, I was leaving my driveway and it stopped working and hasnt worked since. I got out with the truck on and wiggled all the wires on the front and back of the compresser like I read to do, and the clutch doesnt even try to engage. So the problem I am having now is the clutch will not engage, but it is not blowing any fuses. What should I look for next..?
I'm not saying this is your problem but I wiggled wires for years until it refused to engage. I replaced the clutch and all is good now. Motorcraft at Rock Auto.

I would unplug the low pressure sensor on the receiver/dryer, and jump the 2 wires in the plug. If the clutch kicks in, you are either low on refrigerant, or the sensor took a dump. You can do the same with the high pressure sensor, which is located behind the compressor in the small line/hose. This sensor checks if the pressure is to high and will shut the compressor off before damage results. Be very careful while checking these, especially the high pressure switch. You could also run a hot wire from the + post on the battery to the compressor wire to see if the clutch will engauge.
So you found the original problem and fixed it by removing the penny.. So now it is most likely something that you did while trying to locate the original problem. Retrace the things you took apart or moved around. (Not too likely that something else crapped out at the same time?)
In the under hood fuse box the clutch has a diode looks like a black fuse, to prevent back feeding, before jumping the low pressure switch, put the a/c on and check for voltage at the low pressure connector with a test light, you have a test light? We should all have test lights. If you have voltage on one of the leads jump the switch.
