1965 power steering conversion

I know it's been said, but looking for some clarification for my particular set up

1965 f100 with a 390 and a 4 speed new process transmission.

I really need to change is into a power steering for safety concerns.

Can anyone help me with a kit or parts I would need?

You have the ideal truck for conversion. It's been posted numerous times step-by-step. You can get the parts from any 65-79 truck equipped with p/s. 2 systems were used. The earlier uses the same box dimensions as your manual but the quality is suspect. The later is better but requires a shorter steering column. I don't remember when it changed but sometime in the '68-'69 years. If you get a '73 to '79 you can also get disc brakes.

It is easily possible to change to power steering only, but for the work you need to do - and safety reasons you should do - you can add a double master cylinder with disc brakes.
Shoulder surgeries forced this on me as well.

To change to power steering you need parts that cannot be purchased at the parts store, including the pump brackets, the pulleys for the engine and pump, the pitman arm and steering column. This depends on which system you want to use. By far again, the little extra work to install the later system is well worth the cost and time.

To change to disc brakes, you will need parts you cannot get from the parts store, including the spindles, master cylinder supports and brackets.

There are more parts, but many of these can come from a donor truck.
I realize that many folks attempting this project want to cut corners on costs and work - I did! - but the best way to do this, with the engine you have is to buy a '68 - '76 F-100 or F-150 with a 360 or a 390 engine that has power steering and power disc brakes. It will have have all the parts you need to do the conversion, and they will be rated for your truck. This is a nearly bolt-on solution.

You will want to know these details:

1. Similar power steering column, looks and fits like your '66 one: Ford/Saginaw P/S: 1969 - 1972 F100/250 2WD
2. Ford/Saginaw P/S gearbox and pitman arm from serial number D96,001: 1969 - 1979 F100/250 2WD
3. Engine brackets and pulleys - From FE 360/390 from serial number D96,001 to 1976 FE 360/390 - GET IT ALL AS ONE COMPLETE SET.
4. Power disc brakes: Power disc brake parts 1973 - 1979 F100/F150 only (F-250 donor trucks have 8 lug wheels.)

Further, if you suspect an automatic transmission might be in your truck's future, look for one that is an automatic, then transplant it later.

This is what I did:

I bought the parts truck for the power steering changeover to automatic. Took about two weekends, mostly after planning the steps thoroughly. Both steps of changing to power steering and to an automatic required the steering column to change.

A short while later I did the disc brakes. In less than a weekend.

Then I sold extra 1970's parts on E-bay.

Then I scrapped the donor truck for a good piece.

Just my thoughts.

Would something like work?

http://m.ebay.com/itm/111584134960?_trkparms=aid%253D222007%2526algo%253DSIC.MBE%2526ao%253D1%2526asc%253D20140127100817%2526meid%253D9fe6f04fd1574f1b9e7df3c34a734830%2526pid%253D100107%2526rk%253D1%2526rkt%253D25%2526sd%253D111630155056&_trksid=p2056116.c100107.m2460
How is this system on quality and use ability?

I do not recognize the brackets or hoses as correct for your 352, but my guess is that he will obtain the proper ones once he knows the engine it is supposed to fit.
I hold that shortening the steering column is a dangerous proposition.

The 352, 360 and 390 engines are all from the same FE engine family. In fact, you cannot tell the difference from a visual inspection alone. Pretty much anything bolted to the 352 will bolt up to the 360 and the 390.
The 360/390 was not offered in trucks until 1968.
It is common for the 352 to be sold off as a 390. The only way to tell without disassembling the engine to to remove a spark plug and measure the stroke. Easy to do, by the way.
The stroke for the 352 and 360 is 3.50", and 3.75" for the 390.

It looks to me that this kit offers the Ford/Saginaw PS gearbox ($125 at local box store).
This will require a 2" shorter steering column, either from a '69 - '72 truck to look original, or from a '73 - '79, which will also require the later steering wheel. (Some '78-'79s were tilt, too.) Best guess, $250 from a boneyard.

(By the way, for a little bit more than the cost of the kit plus the column, you can probably get the whole truck.)

No power steering was available in 1965.

Bendix P/S: 1966/68 F100/250 2WD; 1969 F100/250 2WD before serial number D96,001.

Ford/Saginaw P/S: 1969 F100/250 2WD & F350 from serial number D96,001; 1970/79 F100/250 2WD & F350.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1978: Ford changed the P/S pump on everything except cars with Hydro-Boost & Econolines (both use the Saginaw pump).

This Ford C-II pump has a plastic reservoir, it's a different shape than the Ford/Thompson P/S pumps that have a steel reservoir, were used 1965/77 (1965 on cars only).

The P/S pressure hose with the steel reservoir threads onto the pump. The P/S pressure hose with the plastic reservoir connects to the pump w/a qwik connect fitting.

There are no FE P/S mounting brackets available for the C-II P/S pump, since FE engines were cancelled at the end of the 1976 model run.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ford offered single, double and triple sheave accessory outer pulleys that bolt to the harmonic balancer to add P/S and/or A/C.

But the pulleys and harmonic balancer used 1960/1967 are different than the same parts used 1968/76.

1960/67 pulleys have 3 mounting holes, 1968/76 pulleys have 4 mounting holes. If using 1968/76 pulleys, a 1968/76 harmonic balancer will also have to be used.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1961/66 F100/250 2WD & 1967/70 F100/350 steering wheels have 3 spokes, are 17" in diameter, use either a horn button or horn ring.

1971/77 steering wheels have 2 spokes, use a vinyl horn bar, are 16" diameter.

1978/79 steering wheels could be 15 1/2" or 16" diameter, use a different horn bar than 1971/77's.

^^^^^^- I have this T-shirt from experience.
Number Dummy is spot on.
Buy a donor truck or find on in a bone yard and spend a day taking it apart and a weekend putting yours together.

4Rings, I don't know. My specialty knowledge is taking Ford factory parts and making them fit retroactively yet look like they belong there with a minimum mount of work. "RestoMod" is the term I would use.

As to your question, I think that column looks like one made by Flaming River Industries or possibly Ididit??? I don't really know. LMC is just the reseller. I prefer to buy my parts up higher the food chain, so to speak, to keep problem resolution at the highest level possible.

I wish I could be of more help.
