I have a 2009 Escape Hybrid. This question has been bugging me for the longest time.
When I start my vehicle in the am and then drive off, while look at the odometer reading for miles till empty, the remaining miles consistently drops significantly within the first mile or 2 of driving (which is is mostly surface roads). On average it is 5-8 miles, but can go as high as 15-20.
I'm sure this is something to do with how the onboard computer calculates MPG, mileage etc.
I suspect you are correct. With the engine cold and the computer in open loop, it will use more fuel. More fuel in less miles makes your estimated miles to empty less. Make sense to me.

Thanks...
But since posting this, the other day it dropped 20 miles within 2 miles of leaving the house.
Thats just too big of a drop. Assuming 5-8 per day or even 20, that adds up
If anyone could confirm/deny this or offer another explanation and/or if that should or should not happen, I would welcome it
