1971 f-250 4x4 engine swap?
Hi,
Sorry about the questions/lack of knowledge...I'm a newby here..just joined I'm experienced on restoring tractors, but pickups are new to me. The 390 (supposedly) engine hammers and knocks, so I need to do something. I want this to be an everyday driver that I can use to tow vintage tractors to shows. Reliability is the main thing..12-14 miles per gallon (not while towing) would be nice, but I don't know if that is possible. Has anyone tried swapping a 351 from an early 90's pickup into one of these? I was kind of thinking engine , 5 speed trans and transfer case. I like the idea of fuel injection and 5 speed. Or are things that can be done to the 390? Sorry about all the questions, but this forum seems to have a huge amount of knowledge.
Thanks for your help.

No apologies necessary. So long as you're willing to read, learn, and do then all is good. We all started in the beginning.....
Fuel injection? Done!
For a 4x4, consider a ZF-5 mated to an NP205.

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate them.
That's a pretty cool lawn tractor..thanks for sharing.
Suposedly a previous owner installed a 390, but it wasn't the guy I bought it from.
I was hoping someone might have info on swapping a 351......but with that info on FI availabe for a 390, maybe I can just modernise what I have.
I just semi-retired after 20+ years as a John Deere parts manager.....so let me know if you have any John Deere questions

cowboylogic57 Welcome to and the Bumpside Forum.
The FE engine in the truck is a pulling engine. A 3/4 ton 4X4 is going to top out at about 7/8 mpg. If I may suggest, with all that is going to be required in the swap, go with a 2010 or newer engine/tranny set for even better choices.
Or look for a 390 in your area that still runs for $5-600.00 and see where you want to go later.
A little to chew on.
John
