I have taken on a rebuild of a 1976 f100 4x4. I have a couple of donor trucks and have a couple of engine questions for the forum
Is the 360 and 390 the same block?
Will they bolt up to the tranny the same?
I have a 360 with 35,000 miles and a 390 with 75,000 mile, which should i use? (They both need seals and such)
Thanks in advance..... Rick

The 360 and 390 are the same blocks. It is the stroke that makes the difference. If your 390 is running well, it should get about the same mileage as the 360 and have more power. Good luck.

Go w/ the higher mileage 390, it'll get twice the mileage and if you've ever felt a 360...it'll feel like twice the power. Now if you really have a bulging back pocket we can help you wake up the 390 a little since you gotta go into it anyways for "seals and such"...cam, headers,4v carb...on and on she goes.
I'd try to do a compression test on both before trying to decide on rebuilding the 390, or converting the 360 to a 390. In any case, you need something to drive around for a while. Run the most sound sound engine, keep the investment minimal. Sink the big $$$ in the other engine.
If it was me, I'd run the 360 assuming a compression test comes out ok, and rebuild the 390. You cant use the 390 crank and rods in a new motor if they're in a running truck...
