Inactive OBDII port.

Good day all.... first time post. Cant figure a much better place to turn to.

Acquired a 2003 f350 super duty xl a short while ago and while everything was perfect for a while it recently began running very rough. Rough idling and shutting off when power is requested. This coincides with a check engine light showing up on the dash.

Went ahead and got a decent ob2 scanner and plugged up. Nilch. Went ahead and checked the usual fuses, namely position #12 which should be attached to the cig. port and all checked out fine. (Cig light works and fuse checks out ok) But still nothing on the obd2 port. Put a test light on all points in the obd2 harness' and nothing.

all attempts to use the port was done with the key in the on position or the truck running.

Is there anything else I'm missing as I'm scratching my head at this point.

Any help would be appreciated beyond words.

Regards

See if the cigarette liter has power of not. They are on the same fuse.
Then look at the harness to see if some rodent has been chewing the Ford
peanut flavored wire insulation. Oh How they love the stuff.
Cayenne pepper sause works well to send them looking for a drink.
Try this if that is what you find.

Heya,

Thanks for the reply.

Yip, the cig. port does have power. I'm guessing its best to tear down the panels to take a look at the wiring underneath. (Briefly looking, all the wires seem to be in good condition)

Also check around the PCM in the engine bay.

Check for power specifically on pin 16 of the OBDII port.

Thanks for the reply.

Checked the pin in question and it has no voltage on it. Am I suppose to get a +12v here from the fuse bus' or from another source (i.e. pcm module)?

Thanks again.

Is the OBD port fuse attached to the power point or cigarette lighter point? Do both work?

Pin 16 is in parallel with the cigar lighter.

If the cigar lighter is indeed powered, then there is a wiring fault (open circuit). Since you recently acquired the truck, don't be surprised if you find the PO had cut or otherwise messed up the wiring in some unknown pursuit. Wouldn't be the first time...

Thank you sir.

Turns out the previous owner had disconnected/cut pin 16 and had used its power lead for something else. (of all the power leads, why this one, ah boy...)

Was able to read the check engine errors and got p1633 and p0720 codes which seem benign. Went ahead and cleared both and restarted several times, no more check light. ***However, the initial problem persists*** Which is rough running almost as if one of the cylinders isn't firing properly.

Prior to this rough running the fuel level was really low and the fuel quality here isn't the best/cleanest. My theory is that one of the injectors is dirty or clogged up. Will move unto cleaning out the fuel system to see if that clears up the rough running. Will take out rail and all injectors and give a cleaning if I can.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

See if your scanner can read Ford's Mode$06 data. Look at TID$53 for individual cylinder misfire counts. That will tell you which cylinder(s) to focus on.

Also, if you can use a scanner that allows you to see fuel trim data, the fuel trim tends to increase when a misfire is caused by a malfunctioning injector, whereas, the fuel trim tends to stay near normal with an ignition misfire. This may help to give you some direction and may save the trouble of pulling the fuel rail or may justify doing that.
